It's All Ohio
The Friday Newsletter takes it home to the Buckeye State
Say, is it time for another Fifty States Friday?
I think it just might be.
In pulling together a seven-part slate of Good Things every Friday for nearly three years running, I often find myself relying on themes, whether loose or well-defined. Sometimes I’ll structure a Friday newsletter around a holiday, other times it’ll be a vibe. Sometimes it’s even been an elaborate exercise in fictional world-building.
My favorite occasional bit, though, has been the Fifty States Project.
If you’re not familiar, this is a conceit I brazenly stole from indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, who in the early aughts publicly declared his intention to record concept albums for each of the fifty US states, following his release of the critically-acclaimed Michigan (2003) and Illinois (2005). He never went any further, and later admitted it had never been a real plan beyond those two albums, but I loved the idea.
