Solutions For College Football's Overtime Problem
Or, "How Do We Make Sure *This* Never Happens Again?"
College football is a marvelous sport; it’s my favorite sport. For four and a half glorious months of weekends, it offers us tremendous pageantry. Tradition. Thrills. The marvels of athletic achievement. Tight, well-played defensive struggles and eye-popping displays of offensive fireworks.
It also, on occasion, offers us something like what the Penn State Nittany Lions and Illinois Illini did this past weekend.
On Saturday, the Big Ten rivals played to a 10-10 tie in regulation. In the first two rounds of overtime, they traded field goals, pushing the score to 16-all. And then?
Well, then they turned football into a strange sort of performance art, putting in five full rounds of scoreless overtime before each scoring in the eighth extra frame, followed by Illinois finally taking the game with an unanswered score in the ninth to win, 20-18, after a full four and half hours of lamentable football-like product.
