You may or may not know this about me—depending on how long you’ve been reading this newsletter or following me on Twitter—but outside of my moonlighting as a writer, I’m a practicing architect.

There’s a lot of misconceptions about what architects do, and I think that’s largely due to the prevalence of architect characters in popular media. It’s a job that sounds vaguely interesting without a lot of baggage, so if you’re writing a sitcom or romantic comedy, it’s easy enough to take your lead and say “uh, they’re an architect”, shove a roll of drawings under their arm, and call it a day.
