I somehow missed The Perfect Age the first time around, but hoo boy. I think I’ve said it before, but I’ve got a weird amount of sentimentality about young children for someone who is only 24 (but is newly a godparent!) and all of those always hit so hard.
Drop the book of essays, coward, is I guess what I’m saying.
From where I am currently sitting in my living room I can see two hardcover books recommended in Friday posts, a few bottles of liquor over on the credenza I otherwise would not have, a poster on the wall I share in common with a small child in Louisville that I've never actually met, and a gift I really need to walk over to the post office and mail your ass already. The last meal I ever made my wife before she moved out and our mostly amicable divorce finalized was from this newsletter (the Jarritos pork chops).
I'm happy you do this all, Scott. I'm happy to have you as a friend.
In all seriousness, ACBN was one of my favorite parts of 2021 - you write with so much heart and grace and good spirits that it's contagious, even when things are heavy and sad. Thank you for all the fun, the delicious and the hilaribad, the books and the songs, and the community. You're one of the good ones. And from the Alabama Gulf Coast, deep in Saban-as-messiah territory: GO BEARCATS. I want a lot of the people living around me to be bummed tonight.
“The Perfect Age” was your best in a sea of excellent writing. And while I don’t know that I could handle the gut punch “The Perfect Age” hits me with every time I read it, I’d still welcome the challenge in a book-form. With kids in their 20s, no matter how very close we thankfully are, I still ache silently for the years when I could hold them in my arms so very tight and wish that time stood still.
I think I made half a dozen of your recipes this year and I agree that the chicken fingers were a winner. Family loved them. Even before this reminder I was thinking about doing them again this week.
Is it next week yet? I have a lot of catching up to do in the newsletter archive, so that should be fun to do. My grandma was a 'bama fan (her family was from NW AL), so my secondary rooting interest is 'bama ... with that said Cincinnati doing football things could open up the playoffs to more teams than the 'blue bloods' (my actual preference is a conference champs only tournament); so I shall root for the underdog and commensurate with which ever side loses.
PS Thank you for the good writing/tweets and happy hogmanay to all y'all.
This newsletter and comment section has been a much needed bright spot in my inbox 3 days a week. High fives to everyone all around.
And Go Bearcats.

Thanks for the newsletters Scott, a true bright spot in what’s been… a year.

Btw, this is a perfect post to share with friends or family that might like to subscribe to the ol’ ActionCookBook Newsletter! ;)
I agree!!

Go Bearcats. Hope you make Saban cry.
Go Bearcats! (And Go Blue)
This edition of the newsletter illustrates how much of value we get for the meagre subscription fee. Thank you, Scott. Pulling for the Bearcats today.

Goddamn Scott do the book already. (I expect an advance copy.)
