80's & 90's kids movies were just... different. I'm remembering Flight of the Navigator where they actually have a scene where the main character has to pull over his hijacked(?) flying saucer to answer the call of nature.
This was an exceptionally accurate representation of 80s movies; I don't like them and I had such a visceral reaction that I almost closed the page multiple times.
Hold on, *trying to teach my 10 year old corgi to play a sick guitar riff*
SON: Kevin Spacedog kinda seems like a rip-off of Poochie
ME: You can't prove that in a court of law
he's wearing a Hawaiian shirt and not a leather jacket, and NO I didn't have to go in and change it after I realized that that was Poochie

Had me believing Space Dog was real for a moment
Space Dog lives in all of our hearts, and several ongoing lawsuits.
It's on the shelf at Blockbuster next to that movie Sinbad made as the genie, Shazaam.
I definitely saw that in a theater
SPACE DOG!
The daughter sobbing while saying “I love you Space Dog” hit way, way too close to home, I could hear my daughter saying it
(Also, very telling that the redacted slur was impossible to narrow down to list less than five)
I didn't want to imply any specific one so it's oddly reassuring that there are so many options
Haha I honestly thought the joke was that there *were* so many options
The Mac and Me reference was where it really started to indicate there would be someone sleeping on the couch.
Space Dog was an Air Bud prequel
Air Bud was a thinly-veiled ripoff of Space Dog.
Punk ass government
Space Dog went on to fight for the Contras.
