This morning's dose of light emotional terrorism only served to remind me how much I used to LOVE the first day of school. I immediately got a flood of sense memories of my old elementary school, how the building smelled, how everything looked, how EXCITING it all was. Even though I now watch my friends going through the bittersweet side of watching their bebes grow, I still get a little jolt of excitement this time of year.

Seeing as I met my closest friends 1) at 6 months old, 2) Preschool, 3) 1st Grade, 4) 2nd Grade and 5) 6th grade...yeah, you never know who’s going to be in those classes

You also might grow up and live in 4 different states, but that’s for a different emotional terrorism post.

Oh how I miss the bittersweet ending of a summer with the kids and watching them begin a new school year (as I quietly cry). Once again, you captured it all, including that no matter what happens in school, they are always unconditionally loved at home.

My kids are too little to be scared of what might happen when they go away. The only recurring fear is that there might be a "creature" at nighttime (thank you Dinosaur Train). But every day care or camp or church class is a new opportunity for me to worry about something horrible. I'm really not sure why we live this way.

Beautifully observed, sir. Our first days of school are well in the rear view, but I still felt every line.

And seconded on travel baseball (or travel anything really). Cross country is great. Will some of the other kids tell you that's a nerd sport? Sure. But aren't those the kids you want your kids to hang around anyway? And a couple of pairs of shoes per season and some decent shorts for training are still a heck of a lot cheaper than multiple weekends at a Residence Inn in Columbus or Indianapolis.

I have several coworkers 10-15 years older than me who have travel-sports-aged kids and, my god. They're ALWAYS on the road.

I spent way too much time shuttling my kids to and from various summer camps carefully arranged like a Jenga stack, so I won't cast aspersions on families that love travel sports. But they weren't for us.

Oh, to be clear, I’m not casting aspersions--it just seems exhausting and expensive and would probably destroy me personally.

I remember personally plunking down about $5.00 worth of quarters in vain efforts to get the Dallas Cowboys pen from the machine in the library.

I learned that A) I should never do slots when I got older and B) I would be set up for a nearly three-decade span of disappointment for believing that I would be rewarded for being a Cowboys fan.

My oldest just started VPK at her daycare, so this week is like the last dry run before the real thing!

My mother will mention in any conversation about me in school that I lost about $500 worth of jackets/sweaters etc in school. Looking back, she’s not wrong lol
