The "Breakers Series" by Edward W. Robertson. Goes all through an alien-engineered pandemic and an alien invasion and beyond. A vast series of over 15 books. Just a tremendously good read. I'm gonna start on it again!
You MUST read the Ben H Winters "Last Policeman" series- about a cop at the end of the world in New Hampshire. MUST MUST MUST.

I think I recommend this before, but if you haven't read "The Gone-Away World," you really should.
