rookie mistake: a lot of poisons separate out into the gas phase when you run them through a decanter, wasting all that effort building up tolerance to a poison that isn't there anymore. I'd recommend pouring Giancalmo's and your glass of wine directly to maximize potency. AND THEN use the decanter on a nice bottle of wine while celebrating at his funeral.

I love that the links all work.

And I'm interested in the decanter- is it good for Amontillado?

Why don’t you come down to the cellar and we’ll see.

That seems a reasonable request, let's go!

The Amontillado is in a cask, so it will need time to breathe, why don't you take your ease in this alcove of the cellar it's much more comfortable there....

My, this IS cozy.

Apologies for the cold and damp, so important for aging the Amontillado. Perhaps a few glasses will warm your bones.... for a bit.

The best part of these newsletters is how Scott takes them like 3 steps further than you might think. Like, he COULD have cut directly to the Derek bit after the ghost that haunts your studio but no, no, there's more and more and more.

I also appreciate how this is probably just his Christmas list for his wife.

You hit on a lot of the gifts that often go overlooked, but one I'd like some advice on is the old man that lives in the ancient house down the road, next to the creek. I see him out fishing all the time. I've never spoken with him, but I'll always owe him for rescuing me out of the creek on the edge of his property. It's a lot deeper than it looks, and the water was much more black than you'd think. I can't recall if I slipped, or something grabbed, but I do recall seeing a fast white blur out of the corner of my eye. The current was pulling me under for what seemed like ages, and I began to have visions of lost loved ones, although they were in a different form. After what seemed like ages I felt a sharp prick in my hand, and next thing I knew I was on shore and the old man was removing a hook from my hand. He walked away while I caught my breath so I haven't been able to thank him. I figure a Christmas gift is the least I could do!

My wife and I got the Ooni pizza oven, and the extra high temperatures definitely improve the home pizza results over using a regular oven. Worth buying for you or your Other.

If not, just slapping a baking steel on a grill works pretty well too. Though I find it's a bit harder to control the temps.

I thought we would find out that Giancalmo was Billy the Bullet’s last name, and these were all gifts for the same person from different points of view.

It’s probably hard to be a bridge monster and a mob boss at the same time though.

Scott (or anyone who has tried one), can you attest to the quality of the ClearlyFrozen tray? I was just looking at it online yesterday as I’m trying to up my home bar game.

So, I put that one in the post because it's the one I use. I can't compare it to other similar products, but I've had good luck with it.

Pros: it makes really nice ice cubes

Cons: it takes up a lot of freezer space, and the insulation for the tub might not hold up over time (it's a dense foam, but one similar to packing material)

I usually make a batch all at once, then remove the cubes and put them in individual ziploc bags for use later, because it's definitely not something I have the freezer space for it to just be in there constantly

Well, you’ve convinced me! Now let’s hope Santa brings me that cocktail shaker set that I asked for...

Gift idea for Olaf:

I'm sure he'd love to have a furry friend in the house that didn't hate every aspect of his existence. Not saying you need another dog, but I'm not not saying that.

I really wish Holly would get on board. I get that she's old and having a young dog much larger than her is an adjustment, but she's such an asshole about it.

Expand full comment

How different/similar was her adjustment to Olaf compared to when she had to adjust to your kids?

Expand full comment
author

Hard to compare, partly because she was considerably younger and less cranky then, but also because the kids--while a huge disturbance to her sense of peace--weren't really playing on the same field as her, compared to a dog who's at her level and wants to play/eat her food/etc.

But she bullies the heck out of him.

Reminds me of old episodes of the Dog Whisperer where calm dogs would "correct" a dog that was a bundle of nervous energy or that wasn't acting right. I wonder if she is trying to "correct" him and assert her dominance but he's just too out there for it to take and her tolerance for nonsense has pretty much disappeared with age. Sorry you have to go through that.

Expand full comment

honestly, while I do have sympathy for her, this premise is too generous to Holly. he's calmed down a lot inside the house, but she'll bark from another room just at the sound of him being let inside. at a certain point, she just needs to adjust.

So, it’s supposed to be Roman numerals, but now that I think about it, it should be “how is five half of four”? Anyways, off to the chasm for me

In case anyone's gonna argue with this the correct way to write 4 in Roman numerals is "IIII" not "IV" which is a another goddamn medievalism and WILL NOT STAND....

Sorry, don't get me started too early in the AM it's like when people use apotheosis when they mean aristeia.
